Will definitely try it next time I'm out that way if I can muster the extra energy.

I'll also watch out for the slippery fallen branches... glad you escaped from that one --Steve Tnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730233429051035621.post-67519010791848238682011-05-16T06:20:25.085+09:002011-05-16T06:20:25.085+09:00Manfred:
Okay, okay, you have been everywhere. ...Manfred:

Okay, okay, you have been everywhere. We yield before your logic. But the route between Uenohara and Rte 18 will henceforth be referred to as "Steve's road", and the Tawa bypass will be, well, the "Tawa Bypass."

Yes, cars are to be used, but the longer a car sits outside, the more difficult it is to get it to actually go. With me, in Tokyo, this is primarily a battery issue -- 3 weeks without use and my car battery is dead. I once had the use of and responsibility for an old Saab -- though not as old as the Tsukui Land Rover -- in Chicago for a year when its owner was on a Fulbright Fellowship in Istanbul, and with an older car, such issues are not limited to the battery. (Of course, the cold weather made it much worse, and Tsukui would be gentler on a car that Chicago.) The tires started to go flat after a few weeks of inaction. The electrical systems generally declined. It was a real struggle to keep it running.

So in my view, even though I would expect more from a rugged SUV in temperate Tsukui, no, the Land Rover is not to be used. It is as good as a movie prop, perhaps without even an engine inside its hood. Maybe it was taken to Tohoku by a charity for use in photos of the various relief missions?David Litthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09821846303393230109noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730233429051035621.post-36913338155065975312011-05-15T23:05:33.505+09:002011-05-15T23:05:33.505+09:00David, you won't be surprised to know I have b...David, you won't be surprised to know I have been everywhere :) But I concede that Steve will have discovered everything before me. That side road out from Uenohara was a road which MOB took me on from the other end on one of our first rides in the area. The Tawa old road is something I discovered earlier this year, and have since shown to Greg on our recent ride. And the footbath path is actually standard for me, as I like to avoid the tunnel and get some spring water close to the tunnel entrance (on the Okutama side). I haven't tried the actual onsen though. I've even done a long phone conference in this very place...

I did some real discoveries yesterday, and challenge Steve to tell me he has been there before. These are nice discoveries because they can actually done by road bike and are doable without relying on trains:

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/85514639

As for the Land Rover, I think I have seen it gone once before - aren't cars there to be used at least every now and then?Manfred von Holsteinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16569864868439666760noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730233429051035621.post-92176097314971923782011-05-15T20:59:24.239+09:002011-05-15T20:59:24.239+09:00David, great ride and great report. Really glad we went up Tsuru (so beautiful) and also pleased that we had the discipline to keep to James M's advise of short one hour rides touching threshold... we just decided to do four of them in a row, that's all !

I think I may have peaked today, but still looking forward to TOITO next weekend --Steve Tnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5730233429051035621.post-45380362833981254112011-05-15T20:34:00.043+09:002011-05-15T20:34:00.043+09:00WHAT ???????? I repeat; it has moved. This will shock and awe positivistas across the globe I am sure. I will post photographic evidence later.

GrahamGraham Dnoreply@blogger.com
